I have an 8" J31 with 50 inch bed a built in the 40's a little later than yours. The direct drive motor housing was used as a cover for a pulley. Yates cut off the low part of the housing and connected a 3-phase 440/480V motor below using a belt drive system. Sometime later this was converted to a 1 HP 220V Baldor motor mounted to some square tube stock bolted between the end supports. I am curious to know if the shelves on your system are sheet metal, cast metal or painted wood. I've never seen one like yours. You must have some good tips for finding old usable parts. I had my J31 for about 3 years before I found an original guard on eBay. I just got lucky.

J31 Yates American Jointer

Great site! I am restoring the same jointer in the 8" version. I was wondering what your plan was for the paint scheme. Are you going to continue the black paint up from the base? What is the other color?

Thanks.

Kyle
